Lucy Gossage, international triathlete and club member, produced a superb time of 9 hours 53 minutes at Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt to finish as the 3rd fastest amateur, and 12th woman overall.
The previous ladies' club record for an Ironman was 9:59, set by Sarah Springman at Ironman Sweden in 1986. It says a lot for both achievements that Sarah's time has stood unchallenged for 24 years.
The Frankfurt performance is no flash in the pan - you can read more about Lucy's emergence at the top of the sport in this interview.
Lucy's result in Frankfurt qualifies her for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, in October. She's excited about the prospect: "Hawaii here I come!" but completely clear about one thing, "There is no point in doing triathlon unless you enjoy it".
Cambridge Triathlon Club has an enthusiastic section of long-distance specialists who train for events like the Ironman races (3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run) and other even longer races. At the other end of the scale, there are regular opportunities for less experienced members to compete in shorter local races, supported by a friendly club and qualified coaches.
